500 Days of summer - Another Boy Meets Girl Movie?

500 Days of summer – Another Boy Meets Girl Movie

Meet Tom Hansen, typical boy who works as a writer for a greeting card company. Boy meets girl, Summer Finn, the new assistant of Tom’s boss. Boy falls for girl, but the girl, Summer, makes it clear that she does not believe in love and does not want a boyfriend. Despite that, they grow closer in the next couple of months. Exchanging view s and sharing ideas. Eventually on day 290, they break up. If I mention the rest, I’d be spoiling the fun for those who haven’t seen it.

The film stars two of the most popular figures in indie cinema, Zooey Deschannel (The Happening) and Joseph Gordon Levitt ( notably from Third Rock from the Sun).  Directed by Marc Webb, the film garnered praise from audiences. It first premiered in the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and was picked and distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures and was released in several theaters last July 2009. The movie was co-written by Scott Neustadter, who admits that the character of Summer was loosely based on a girl he madly feel in love with, but did not feel the same way he did. The whimsical disclaimer at the opening of the movie which reads, “"Any resemblance to people living or dead is purely accidental ... Especially you, Jenny Beckman ... Bitch," mirrors the writers emotion at the time. continue reading

Astro Boy: Flying High!

Being one of the most popular robots in anime history is not an easy feat, but Astro Boy seems to be doing just fine in living up to his fame.
Astro Boy was the brainchild of what most people call, “the father of Japanese anime,” Osamu Tezuka. Growing up, Tezuka witnessed the firebombing of Osaka and was a victim of a beating by US soldiers since he could not speak proper English.  In 1951, Tezuka created Astro Boy, the robot that had a soul. This was six years after World War II ended. After 12 years, he created a black and white anime for the robot.

Astro Boy’s themes revolved around various problems we face as a society, including war, death, racism, technology, morality and science to name a few. The irony is that Astro Boy is not human, yet above everyone he understands and fights against all the evil that’s happening around him. Typical of anime and manga fashion, the storylines are sometimes deeper and encompassing than what you would normally expect for a children’s program. continue reading

Dreams: A Film by Akira Kurosawa

Dreams A Film by Akira Kurosawa photo

People who might not be as obsessive with Japanese films as I am may not have heard of Dreams, or its creator Akira Kurosawa. To call Akira Kurosawa a legend in Japanese cinema, may be an understatement. With over 30 films in his 50 year career, he is considered a very important and influential figure in film history.

Kurosawa created the movie, Dreams, and released it in 1990. What’s interesting about this film is that unlike regular movies, it doesn’t focus much on dialogue, but rather on imagery. The film is divided into eight “dreams” of which several were based on the filmmaker’s own.

These eight short segments include The Peach Orchard, Sunshine Through the Rain, The Blizzard, Crows, Mount Fuji in Red, The Weeping Demon, the Village of the Watermills and The Tunnel. continue reading

Eminem: Getting a Refill

Eminem Getting a Refill photo

Marshall Bruce Mathers III, otherwise popularly known as Eminem, has been the stuff of controversy before and he’s not afraid to be on the front page again.
Eminem gained notoriety in 1999 after releasing his album The Slim Shady LP. This same album was filled with controversial songs that had fiery lyrics, from a song that resembles an open letter from a deranged fan that killed his wife, to a name dropping and dissing big name celebrities. However, it was obvious that despite the violent lyrics, people loved him. In fact, the same album went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album.

And it didn’t end there; Eminem became the first ever male artist to win Best Rap Album for three consecutive records, The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show respectively. continue reading
